Looking Up

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek first those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth”

(Colossians 3:1-2).

We can often be bombarded with things that compete for our attention. Televisions blare, computers whir, and phones ding to announce incoming messages and/or calls. There are spouses, children, bosses, and even dreams that do not want you to forget them. So, you try not to. You do your best to give your loved ones attention, to check your messages, and as much as you may (or may not) want to, lay eyes on one of the many screens that seem to be everywhere. One can often find themselves busy and yet at the same time, feel as though nothing gets done. The distractions of the day can leave one exhausted and at times frustrated, wondering when a much needed break will arrive. There can be so much information around us that we forget about someone very important.

He who created us.

God did not create us so that we could live without purpose, nor did Jesus die for our sins just to forget him. A great sacrifice was made, so that we could fulfill our purpose just as he fulfilled his. When we are only focused on Earthly matters, we can sometimes forget what is truly important. We can become so invested in the media that we absorb, that we do not remember who is truly in control.

Our goal should not be what the world views as a success, but what God views as a success. He has placed within each of us gifts and the ability (through him) to use those gifts. And though emails with reminders of bills and other responsibilities may fill our inbox as well as our mind with dread, remember that it is He that knows all and is in control of all. He knows our fears, he knows our hopes and dreams, but above all, he knows our potential. It is through the act of setting our “affection on things above, not on things on the earth,” that we can focus on what is truly important…obedience unto his will.
