Lately, I have been thinking a lot about how our mistakes shape us. Situations that we experience, great or small, have the ability to leave great marks in our lives. Some we can laugh about with our friends, while others we hope are wiped from our memories. The latter are the ones that I would like to address.
Everyone makes mistakes. Every single being falters at one point or another. We may miscalculate our circumstances and fall, and afterwards find it difficult to recover. The most difficult part of such events sometimes is not the error itself, but those around us who witnessed it. The embarrassment that can follow has the ability to stop us from trying again. The house that is our mind can open windows of thought which can allow stress and anxiety to pour through.
People need to learn to be patient with themselves. If God can give us another chance, then we can give ourselves another chance. God often wants us to try again when we fail, especially when it is he that asks us to do something. He wants us to try again and not operate out of fear. As it states in his word, “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:07).
The next time you make an error, do not give up. There may be moments that you wish you could erase, but if that really were a possibility, you would make the same mistakes over and over again due to the fact that it “never happened.” Mistakes help us grow and learn; they help us evolve into the fantastic beings God created us to be, flaws and all.
